Why expectant parents choose First Steps

Most antenatal classes focus mainly on birth. We prepare you for birth and everything that comes after.

Traditional antenatal classes often focus mainly on labour and birth, with limited time given to real-life postnatal topics. At First Steps, we take a whole journey approach:

Pregnancy → Labour → Birth → Postnatal Recovery → Newborn Behaviour & Safety

This means families leave feeling prepared not only for birth, but for the realities of caring for a newborn in the first days, weeks and months.

Our unique approach includes:

 ✔ More comprehensive content
We cover labour, birth, interventions, recovery, feeding, newborn behaviour, sleep, safety and postnatal mental health — not just the delivery room.

Realistic, balanced education
We talk through all birth pathways (physiological, induced, assisted, caesarean) without bias or judgement, so you can make informed decisions.

Evidence-based and parent-friendly
Everything we teach is grounded in current guidance and research, explained in a calm, clear and supportive way.

Partner-inclusive
Partners are given meaningful roles, tools and confidence for both labour and the newborn period.

Postnatal focus
Most families tell us the newborn stage is where they felt least prepared — which is why we give it the attention it deserves.

Real-world preparation
We cover things parents genuinely need to know: cluster feeding, contact naps, rashes, safe sleep, red flags, crying patterns, development leaps, and more.

If you want to feel informed, confident and supported from pregnancy through the first 12 weeks at home, this course was designed for you.

This course is ideal for you if you want to:
✔ Feel confident about birth options
✔ Learn what NHS classes don’t cover
✔ Understand newborn care — including feeding, sleep, and normal concerns
✔ Join a supportive parent community

Meet Your Antenatal Mentor

Hi, I’m Kelly — the founder of First Steps Antenatal & Postnatal.

Welcome and congratulations on your pregnancy or new arrival.

At First Steps, my aim is simple: to help you feel calm, confident, and genuinely prepared for birth and life with your baby — not just the first few days, but the months that follow too.

My classes offer a supportive, judgment-free space where no question is ever “silly”. If something is on your mind, it matters — and you deserve clear, evidence-based answers without feeling rushed or dismissed.

Why I do what I do

When I was pregnant in 2023, I struggled to find antenatal classes that truly fit my needs. Local NHS classes weren’t available, and other options were fully booked or didn’t run at practical times. When I eventually found an alternative, it completely changed how prepared and confident I felt — and it sparked a passion to make that kind of support more accessible for other parents.

First Steps was created so parents don’t feel they have to “make do” or figure things out alone.

What makes First Steps different

Many antenatal classes focus mainly on labour and the first few days after birth. While that preparation is important, it often leaves parents feeling unprepared for what comes next.

At First Steps, we go further.

Alongside birth preparation, I support you through:

  • Newborn behaviour (including sleep and feeding)
  • What’s normal — and what’s not — in those early weeks
  • The emotional and physical changes parents experience
  • Practical questions that usually only come up at 2am

This means fewer surprises, less anxiety, and more confidence when you’re home with your baby.

You’re not meant to “just crack on”

So many parents ask:

Why is my baby so noisy at night?
Why isn’t my baby sleeping through yet?
Is this feeding behaviour normal?
Why didn’t anyone warn me about this stage?

These are incredibly common — and completely valid questions. There are so many things parents aren’t told to expect.

My role is to help you understand what’s normal, what support is available, and how to feel more confident navigating those early months — so you’re not left second-guessing yourself.

You don’t have to do this alone

Whether you’re preparing for birth, navigating early parenthood, or simply want reassurance that what you’re experiencing is normal, First Steps is here to support you.

I’d love to welcome you into one of my classes.
If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via the enquiries page.
